Onam is the biggest and the most important festival of the state of Kerala. It is a harvest festival and is celebrated with joy and enthusiasm all over the state by the people of all communities. According to a popular legend, the festival is celebrated to welcome King Mahabali, whose spirit is said to visit Kerala at the time of Onam. Carnival of Onam lasts from four to ten days. Elaborate feasts, folk songs, elegant dances, elephants, boat races and flowers all are a part of the dynamic festival of Onam. The major attractions of Onam are:
- Onam sadya: it is considered to be the most elaborate and the grand meal prepared by any civilization or culture in the world.
- Pookalam: it is an intricate and colourful arrangement of flowers laid on the floor. Tradition of decorating flowers is extremely popular in Kerala.
- Vallamkali or Snake Boat Race: it is the most enchanting facet of the festival of Onam. The event is promoted as a major tourist attraction and draws a number of domestic and international tourists.
- Pulikali or Tiger Dance: it is a colourful recreational folk art from the state of Kerala held at Thrissur.
